Explicit Runge-Kutta Schemes and Finite Elements with Symmetric Stabilization for First-Order Linear PDE Systems

چکیده
We analyze explicit Runge–Kutta schemes in time combined with stabilized finite elements in space to approximate evolution problems with a first-order linear differential operator in space of Friedrichs-type. For the time discretization, we consider explicit secondand third-order Runge–Kutta schemes. We identify a general set of properties on the spatial stabilization, encompassing continuous and discontinuous finite elements, under which we prove stability estimates using energy arguments. Then, we establish L-norm error estimates with (quasi-)optimal convergence rates for smooth solutions in space and time. These results hold under the usual CFL condition for third-order Runge–Kutta schemes and any polynomial degree in space and for second-order Runge– Kutta schemes and first-order polynomials in space. For second-order Runge–Kutta schemes and higher polynomial degrees in space, a tightened 4/3-CFL condition is required. Numerical results are presented for the advection and wave equations.

Nonstandard explicit third-order Runge-Kutta method with positivity property
When one solves differential equations, modeling physical phenomena, it is of great importance to take physical constraints into account. More precisely, numerical schemes have to be designed such that discrete solutions satisfy the same constraints as exact solutions. Based on general theory for positivity, with an explicit third-order Runge-Kutta method (we will refer to it as RK3 method) pos...
متن کاملImplicit-Explicit Runge-Kutta schemes and finite elements with symmetric stabilization for advection-diffusion equations
We analyze a two-stage implicit-explicit Runge–Kutta scheme for time discretization of advection-diffusion equations. Space discretization uses continuous, piecewise affine finite elements with interelement gradient jump penalty; discontinuous Galerkin methods can be considered as well. The advective and stabilization operators are treated explicitly, whereas the diffusion operator is treated i...
متن کاملTHE USE OF A RUNGE-KUTTA SCHEME FOR AN ODE-PDE MODEL OF SUPPLY CHAINS
Integrating various suppliers to satisfy market demand is of great importance for e ective supply chain management. In this paper, we consider the ODE-PDE model of supply chain and apply a classical explicit fourth-order Runge-Kutta scheme for the related ODE model of suppliers. Also, the convergence of the proposed method is proved. Finally a numerical example is studied to demonstrate the acc...
متن کاملLow-storage implicit/explicit Runge-Kutta schemes for the simulation of stiff high-dimensional ODE systems
Implicit/explicit (IMEX) Runge-Kutta (RK) schemes are effective for time-marching ODE systems with both stiff and nonstiff terms on the RHS; such schemes implement an (often A-stable or better) implicit RK scheme for the stiff part of the ODE, which is often linear, and, simultaneously, a (more convenient) explicit RK scheme for the nonstiff part of the ODE, which is often nonlinear. Low-storag...
متن کامل2-stage explicit total variation diminishing preserving Runge-Kutta methods
In this paper, we investigate the total variation diminishing property for a class of 2-stage explicit Rung-Kutta methods of order two (RK2) when applied to the numerical solution of special nonlinear initial value problems (IVPs) for (ODEs). Schemes preserving the essential physical property of diminishing total variation are of great importance in practice. Such schemes are free of spurious o...
